What to visit in Madrid
Puerta del Sol
This is the zero kilometer of Madrid, and a clock with a special tune to celebrate the New Year, part of the construction of the Casa de Correos, the government building. The statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree, which stands next to the gate, are considered a symbol of the city.
Cibeles Square
One of the most beautiful squares in Madrid. It is surrounded by buildings built in neo-classical style, one of which is the Cibeles Palace itself. In the middle of the square stands a very important statue for Madrid, the Fuente de la Cibeles, part of a magnificent fountain. It depicts the goddess Cybele in a chariot pulled by lions.
Palacio Real
Residence of Spanish kings, starting with Charles III and the last royal family to live in the palace being that of Alfonso XIII. Now the building is used for ceremonies, with 50 rooms open to tourists. They include the armoury, the pharmacy and a hall.
Gran Via
The street that never "sleeps", with shops, restaurants and the headquarters of many companies concentrated here.
El Retiro
It is a huge park where lush gardens, magnificent fountains and buildings on the outskirts of the city stretch out.
There is an artificial lake here on which to take a boat, kayak or canoe and enjoy a peaceful stroll.
Prado Museum
One of Madrid's most popular attractions, where you can discover artworks from the 12th to the early 19th century.
Santiago Bernabeu Stadium
Owned by the famous football club Real Madrid, it is one of the largest stadiums in the world. Regular tours are organized here.
La Latina
One of Madrid's oldest and most beautiful city districts.
