LITHIUM BATTERIES - TRANSPORT RESTRICTIONS
Due to the increased risk of fire or explosion caused by high temperatures, mechanical shocks, or manufacturing defects, lithium-based batteries are accepted with certain restrictions and require special precautionary measures during air transport.
Portable Electronic Devices (PED) or Portable Medical Electronic Devices (PMED) with incorporated lithium batteries:
- Allowed in carry-on and checked baggage.
- If transported in checked baggage and the battery is removable, the battery will be removed and carried in the passenger's carry-on baggage.
- Devices must be switched off (not in sleep mode) and protected from unintentional activation (e.g., original packaging, tapping over the terminals and placing it inside a plastic bag).
- PED examples: phones, laptops, tablets, cameras etc.
- PMED examples: portable oxygen concentrator, nebulizer, etc.
Spare lithium batteries and power banks:
- Must be carried in carry-on baggage only. Not permitted in checked baggage.
- Must be individually protected from short circuits or unintentional activation (e.g., original packaging, tapping over the terminals and placing it inside a plastic bag).
- It is prohibited to use power banks to charge electronic devices during the flight.
- A maximum of 2 power banks, each not exceeding 100Wh, are permitted per passenger.
- Power banks exceeding 100Wh are prohibited from carriage on board aircraft.
E-Cigarettes and Vaping devices:
- Must be carried in carry-on baggage only. Not permitted in checked baggage.
- Must be turned off and protected from accidental activation (e.g., original packaging, tapping over the terminals and placing it inside a plastic bag).
- Smoking and charging the device during the flight are prohibited.
Limitation in Watt-Hour (Wh) or Lithium Content (G) of the lithium batteries (spares or incorporated in PED):
- Each battery must not exceed: 100 Wh (for lithium-ion) or 2 g lithium content (for lithium metal).
- Batteries over 100 Wh but up to 160 Wh: allowed only with prior airline approval - maximum 2 spare batteries.
- Batteries over 160 Wh: Not permitted for transportation as passenger baggage.
