Discover Heraklion: A Jewel of Crete

Heraklion, the vibrant capital of Crete, combines ancient history, breathtaking scenery, and a warm Mediterranean climate. Known for its connection to the legendary Hercules and the mythical Minotaur’s Labyrinth, the city offers visitors a rich blend of cultural heritage and modern attractions.

Highlights of Heraklion

History and Culture:

● Palace of Knossos:

According to legend, the Palace of Knossos was built during the Bronze Age by the great architect, painter, and sculptor Daedalus, who was exiled from Athens and found refuge in Crete at the court of King Minos. There, Daedalus constructed the famous labyrinth where King Minos concealed the monstrous Minotaur. Legend says that no one who entered the labyrinth could find their way out. Only King Theseus managed to defeat the Minotaur and escape the labyrinth with the help of a thread.

● Saint Titus Cathedral:

This beautiful temple was built in the 10th century by order of the future Byzantine Emperor Nicephorus Phocas. Throughout its history, the temple has served as an Orthodox church, a Catholic cathedral, and a Muslim mosque. Today, it is an Orthodox cathedral known for its vibrant stained-glass windows and its massive carved wooden chandelier.

Fortress of Koules:

The Venetians called the fortress Rocca al Mare. On the main walls of the fortress, there is an image of a lion symbolizing Saint Mark the Evangelist. This also serves as a symbol for the cities of Heraklion and Venice. Every year, the Venetians used their old fleet to transport stones from the nearby islands of Dia and Franski.

● Venetian Loggia:

This elegant building from the first half of the 17th century once served as a public building and a kind of club for the city's noble residents.

Modern Attractions:

● Aquarium of Crete:

The Cretaquarium is located 15 km from Heraklion, in the small town of Hersonissos. It houses over 2,500 marine creatures.

● Shopping on Dedalou Street:

Indulge in boutique fashion, jewelry, and local specialties like olive oil and cheese.

Best Time to Visit:
